Business & Careers

Dickinson’s business and career opportunities are broad and varied. In addition to the standard list of career opportunities found in communities, such as bankers, accountants, lawyers, insurance and health care professionals, to name a few, Dickinson State University offers a wide variety of opportunities, both as an employer and as a well respected university. Varied retail establishments and restaurants also provide career opportunities as well as shopping pleasure.

Southwest North Dakota is home to manufacturing in several industries, such as integrated workspace and storage systems, baked products, electric thermal storage, solar powered reservoir circulators, electronic circuits, and pump systems, to name a few. The variety and volume of manufacturers in the area attests to the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in this region of the state.

Agriculture flourishes in the area as well and is supported by the North Dakota State University Research Extension Center. Recently, the energy industry has entered a boom phase with oil exploration in the western regions of the state and a proposed coal gasification plant Southwest of Dickinson.

In the past, many North Dakotans have left the area to pursue career opportunities elsewhere. With the variety and depth of available business, entrepreneurial and career options open to individuals at all levels of their career, leaving the state to obtain experience is no longer necessary. In fact, a great many North Dakotans have returned to raise their families in an environment where opportunities now abound.
